Starting Seeds Indoors for Spring Transplant
Timing Your Indoor Seed Starting
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants need the longest head start. Check seed packets for specific timing recommendations for each variety.
Setup Essentials
- Seed starting mix: sterile, lightweight, and well-draining
- Cell trays or recycled containers with drainage holes
- Grow lights positioned 2-4 inches above seedlings
- Heat mats for warm-season crops that need 75-80°F soil
Lighting Requirements
Seedlings need 14-16 hours of light daily. Fluorescent or LED grow lights work best. Keep lights close to prevent leggy growth and raise them as seedlings grow. A timer automates the light cycle.
Hardening Off Before Transplant
Move seedlings outdoors gradually over 7-10 days. Start with 1 hour of filtered sun and increase daily. This process toughens stems and acclimates leaves to full sunlight without transplant shock.
