Protecting Young Trees From Winter Damage
Why Young Trees Suffer More
Young trees have thin bark that is susceptible to sunscald (southwest-facing bark warms on sunny winter days, then cracks when temperatures drop at night). Their root systems are shallow and not yet established enough to access deep soil moisture.
Trunk Protection
Wrap trunks with white tree wrap or paint diluted white latex paint on the south and west sides. This reflects sunlight and prevents the temperature swings that cause bark splitting. Remove wraps in early spring to prevent moisture buildup and insect habitat.
Root Zone Care
Apply 3–4 inches of mulch in a wide ring (extend to the drip line if possible). Keep mulch 3 inches away from the trunk to prevent rot and rodent nesting. Water deeply before the ground freezes — a well-hydrated root system tolerates cold better.
Anti-Desiccant for Evergreens
Spray anti-desiccant (wilt-pruf type products) on young evergreen foliage in late fall and again in mid-winter during a thaw. This coats needles and reduces moisture loss from winter winds.
Animal Damage Prevention
Install hardware cloth or plastic tree guards 18 inches above the anticipated snow line to protect against rabbits and voles that gnaw bark when food is scarce.
