Growing Microgreens on Your Windowsill

Growing Microgreens on Your Windowsill

The Easiest Edible You Can Grow Anywhere

Microgreens, tiny seedlings harvested 7-21 days after germination, are among the most nutrient-dense foods you can grow. A sunny windowsill is all you need to produce a continuous supply of these flavorful, vitamin-packed greens.

Why Microgreens Are Perfect for Apartments

They need minimal space (a 10x20 inch tray), no special equipment, and produce harvests in as little as one week. They are ideal for renters, students, and anyone with limited outdoor growing space.

Choosing Your Seeds

Beginner-friendly microgreen varieties include: sunflower (nutty, crunchy), radish (spicy, fast-growing), broccoli (mild, cancer-fighting compounds), and pea shoots (sweet, tendril-covered). Buy untreated, food-grade seeds specifically labeled for microgreen growing.

Basic Setup

You need shallow trays with drainage holes, a growing medium (soil, coconut coir, or hemp mats), and a light source. A south-facing windowsill provides sufficient light for most varieties. For north-facing windows, add a simple LED grow light.

Step-by-Step Growing Process

Moisten your growing medium and spread it 1-2 inches deep in the tray. Scatter seeds densely across the surface, about 10-12 seeds per square inch. Press seeds gently into the medium. Cover with a thin layer of medium or another tray for blackout germination. Keep moist with a spray bottle, misting twice daily. Uncover after 3-4 days when seeds have sprouted. Move to bright light and continue misting.

Troubleshooting

Mold on soil surface means too much moisture, so increase airflow and reduce misting. Leggy, pale stems mean insufficient light. Slow germination often indicates old seeds or temperatures below 65 degrees F.

With a single tray, you can produce 4-8 ounces of microgreens, enough for daily salads and garnishes for an entire week.
