Indoor Herb Garden Setup for Winter Growing
Choosing Herbs for Indoor Growing
The best indoor herb candidates are basil, chives, parsley, mint, thyme, and oregano. Rosemary and lavender prefer cooler conditions and may struggle with indoor heating.
Light Requirements
Herbs need 6-8 hours of direct light daily. A south-facing window is ideal. Supplement with full-spectrum LED grow lights positioned 6-12 inches above plants, running 12-14 hours on a timer.
Containers and Soil
Use pots with drainage holes, at least 6 inches deep. Fill with well-draining potting mix amended with perlite (3:1 ratio). Avoid garden soil which compacts indoors.
Watering and Feeding
Water when the top inch feels dry. Feed with diluted liquid fertilizer every 3-4 weeks at half strength during winter.
Troubleshooting
Leggy growth means insufficient light. Yellow lower leaves suggest overwatering. White mold on soil indicates too much moisture and poor air circulation.
