Indoor Herb Garden: Winter Growing Setup Guide

Fresh Herbs All Winter Long

An indoor herb garden transforms dreary winter meals with fresh basil, rosemary, and cilantro at arm's reach. With the right setup, you can harvest daily from your kitchen windowsill.

Choosing Your Herbs

Light Requirements

A south-facing window works for hardy herbs. Supplement with LED grow lights (12-16 hours/day) for tender herbs like basil. A 30-40 dollar setup supports 4-6 herbs.

Containers and Soil

Use individual terra cotta pots with drainage holes (4-6 inch). Fill with well-draining mix: 3 parts potting soil, 1 part perlite.

Watering and Feeding

Most herbs prefer to dry slightly between waterings. Feed with half-strength liquid fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. Over-fertilizing produces lush but flavorless growth.

Harvesting for Continuous Growth

Never remove more than one-third of the plant at once. Pinch basil tips to prevent flowering. Cut chives 1 inch above soil. Snip rosemary and thyme from branch tips.
