Grow Light Height Guide for Seedlings
Light Distance Is Critical
The most common mistake new seed starters make is placing grow lights too far above their seedlings. Light intensity drops dramatically with distance — doubling the distance cuts intensity to one-quarter. For compact, sturdy seedlings, lights must stay close.
Distance Schedule by Growth Stage
- Germination (before emergence): 4-6 inches above soil surface
- Cotyledon stage: 2-4 inches above seedling tops
- First true leaves: 3-4 inches above canopy
- Rapid growth phase: 4-6 inches, adjusting daily
- Pre-transplant hardening: 6-8 inches to slow growth
Signs of Incorrect Distance
Too Far (Leggy Seedlings)
Stems stretch rapidly, become thin and pale. Seedlings lean toward the light source. This is irreversible — leggy seedlings never develop strong stems. Raise lights immediately or start over.
Too Close (Light Burn)
Leaf tips turn white or brown. Leaves curl upward. Growth stalls. With LED panels, this is rare unless the light is literally touching foliage. With fluorescent tubes, close contact can cause heat damage.
Light Duration
Run lights 14-16 hours per day for most vegetables. Use a timer — inconsistent photoperiods confuse seedlings. Provide 8 hours of darkness; plants need dark periods for root development and hormone regulation.
Adjustable Mounting Solutions
Build or buy a light stand with adjustable chains or ratchet hangers. The ability to raise lights 1-2 inches per day as seedlings grow makes the difference between stocky transplants and spindly failures. Check height daily during the rapid growth phase.
