Why October Is Perfect for Container Redesign
Summer annuals are fading, nurseries have fall stock, and the cooler weather makes planting comfortable. A well-designed fall container garden can look stunning from October through Thanksgiving.
The Thriller-Filler-Spiller Formula for Fall
- Thriller: Ornamental kale, dwarf Japanese maple, or fountain grass
- Filler: Pansies, chrysanthemums, heuchera, or ornamental peppers
- Spiller: Ivy, creeping Jenny, or trailing sedum
Color Palettes That Work
Warm Harvest: Deep burgundy mums, orange ornamental peppers, golden ornamental grasses, and dark-leaved heuchera.
Cool Elegance: Purple flowering kale, silver dusty miller, white pansies, and blue fescue grass.
Natural Woodland: Miniature pumpkins, pine cones, birch branches with evergreen ferns and moss.
Container Care Through Fall
Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. Add a layer of mulch or decorative moss to retain moisture and insulate roots. Deadhead spent mums for reblooming.
Budget-Friendly Fall Accents
Add non-plant elements: pumpkins, gourds, corn husks, birch logs, or dried hydrangea stems for seasonal charm.
