Keep Your Compost Active Through Winter
Composting Doesn't Stop in Winter
Microbial life doesn't die in cold — it hibernates. With proper management, your compost bin continues breaking down material through winter.
Insulating Your Compost Pile
- Minimum volume: 1 cubic meter (3x3x3 feet) to retain heat
- Straw bales: Stack around the bin for insulation
- Cover with tarp: Dark tarp traps heat, blocks excess moisture
- Build on soil: Earthworms enter; ground provides thermal mass
Carbon-Nitrogen Balance
Winter needs higher C:N ratio (30:1). Add 2–3 parts browns (dried leaves, newspaper, cardboard) for every 1 part greens (kitchen scraps, coffee grounds). Chop scraps under 2 inches for faster breakdown.
Turning Frequency
Turn every 3–4 weeks instead of weekly. Each turning releases trapped heat. Move outer material to center when turning.
Indoor Alternative: Vermicomposting
Red wiggler worms process kitchen scraps in a bin that fits under a counter, producing premium castings year-round with no odor when managed correctly.
