Philodendron Overview

Philodendrons are one of the most diverse houseplant genera, with over 450 known species. They fall into two main growth habits: vining (climbing) and self-heading (upright). Here are 12 of the most popular varieties for indoor growing.

Vining Philodendrons

1. Heartleaf Philodendron (P. hederaceum)

The classic beginner plant. Small heart-shaped leaves on trailing stems. Tolerates low light and irregular watering. Can grow 10+ feet long.

2. Philodendron Brasil

A cultivar of heartleaf with striking yellow-green variegation down the center of each leaf. Equally easy to care for as its parent.

3. Philodendron Micans

Velvety, iridescent leaves that shift from green to bronze depending on light. A collector favorite for its unique texture.

4. Philodendron Scandens (Sweetheart)

Similar to heartleaf but with slightly larger, more elongated leaves. Excellent for hanging baskets.

5. Philodendron Gloriosum

Large, velvety dark-green leaves with prominent white veins. A crawling type that spreads horizontally. Highly sought after.

6. Philodendron Pastazanum

Enormous, glossy, quilted leaves on a crawling stem. One of the largest indoor philodendrons. Needs space and humidity.

Self-Heading Philodendrons

7. Philodendron Rojo Congo

Dramatic burgundy-red new growth maturing to deep green. Upright habit, grows 2-3 feet wide. Bold statement plant.

8. Philodendron Birkin

Compact dark-green leaves with white pinstripes. Stays under 2 feet. A mutation of Rojo Congo.

9. Philodendron Pink Princess

Dark leaves splashed with bubblegum pink. Requires bright indirect light to maintain variegation. Premium price.

10. Philodendron Imperial Red

Broad, glossy leaves with deep red undersides. Upright growth to 3 feet. Low maintenance.
