Cold Hardiness Zones: The Science Behind the Map

Cold Hardiness Zones: The Science Behind the Map

How Zones Are Defined

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 13 zones based on average annual extreme minimum temperature. Each zone represents a 10°F band, further divided into 'a' and 'b' sub-zones of 5°F each. Zone 5a, for example, has extreme minimums between -20°F and -15°F.

Data Behind the Map

The current map (updated 2023) uses data from 1991–2020 collected at over 13,000 weather stations. Earlier maps used shorter time windows, which is why some gardeners notice their zone has shifted half a zone warmer over recent decades.

What Zones Do Not Capture

Using Zones Wisely

Treat your zone as a starting point, not a guarantee. Microclimates (south-facing walls, low frost pockets, urban heat islands) can shift your effective zone by one full number in either direction.
