Winter Watering Schedule: Avoid Overwatering (2026)
The Winter Watering Paradox
More houseplants die from overwatering in winter than from any other cause. Shorter days, lower light, cooler temperatures, and reduced evaporation mean plants drink far less than in summer.
General Winter Watering Guidelines
- Tropical foliage: Water when top 2 inches of soil are dry
- Succulents and cacti: Water only when soil is completely dry — every 3–4 weeks
- Ferns and calatheas: Keep soil lightly moist, check every 4–5 days
- Orchids: Water when medium is nearly dry, typically every 7–10 days
The Finger Test and Beyond
Insert your index finger 2 inches into the soil. For deeper pots, use a soil moisture meter. Bluetooth soil sensors provide continuous readings to your phone.
Water Quality Matters
Let tap water sit 24 hours to reach room temperature and allow chlorine to dissipate. For sensitive plants (calathea, dracaena), use filtered or rainwater.
Drainage: Non-Negotiable
Every pot must have drainage holes. Empty standing water from cache-pots within 30 minutes. Sitting in water for even a few hours can initiate root rot.
