Fall Propagation: Tropical Plant Cuttings
Why Fall Works for Tropical Propagation
While spring is the traditional propagation season, fall offers a practical advantage: you are already bringing plants indoors and pruning them, so you have abundant cutting material.
Best Tropicals for Fall Cuttings
- Pothos: Root in water in 1-2 weeks, nearly foolproof
- Philodendron: Stem cuttings with a node root in 2-3 weeks
- Coleus: Vibrant colors, roots in 7-10 days in water
- Tradescantia: Extremely fast rooter, great for beginners
- Monstera: Air layer or stem cuttings with aerial root
Water Propagation Method
Cut a 4-6 inch stem section with at least one node. Remove lower leaves, place in clean water, and change water every 3-4 days. Roots appear in 1-4 weeks.
Soil Propagation Method
Dip the cut end in rooting hormone powder, insert into moist perlite or peat-perlite mix, and cover with a clear plastic bag to maintain humidity. Ventilate daily.
Common Fall Propagation Mistakes
- Cuttings too long (excess foliage demands more water than roots supply)
- Water temperature too cold (use room-temperature water)
- Direct sunlight on cuttings (causes overheating under plastic covers)
