Soil Amendments for Spring: Start Preparing Now
Winter: The Best Time to Build Better Soil
While above-ground gardening is dormant, the soil beneath is alive with microbial activity. Winter is the ideal season to amend, test, and prepare garden beds.
Step 1: Test Your Soil
A basic test kit ($15–$25) measures pH, N, P, and K. For detailed analysis, send samples to your extension service.
- pH below 6.0: Add garden lime at 5 lbs per 100 sq ft
- pH above 7.5: Add elemental sulfur or pine needles
- Low nitrogen: Add blood meal or composted manure
- Low phosphorus: Add bone meal or rock phosphate
Step 2: Add Organic Matter
Spread 2–3 inches of finished compost over beds and lightly incorporate. Leaf mold (decomposed shredded leaves) is an excellent free alternative.
Cover Crops
Sow crimson clover, winter rye, or hairy vetch on empty beds. Clover fixes 1–3 lbs nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft from atmospheric sources.
Step 3: Plan Spring Amendments
Based on test results, order bulk materials in late winter. Pre-order specialty amendments like mycorrhizal inoculants or biochar if needed.
