Propagating Monstera in Water This Fall
Why Fall Propagation Works
While spring is the traditional propagation season, fall offers advantages for Monstera cuttings. Cooler temperatures reduce rot risk, and stored summer energy fuels root development.
Selecting the Right Cutting
Choose a healthy stem with at least one node and one or two leaves. Avoid stems with yellowing leaves or soft spots. A cutting 6-8 inches long works best.
Step-by-Step Water Propagation
- Cut 1/4 inch below a node using clean, sharp shears
- Remove the lowest leaf to expose the node
- Place cutting in a clear glass jar with room-temperature filtered water
- Submerge the node but keep remaining leaves above water
- Position in bright, indirect light away from heating vents
Care During Rooting
Change water every 5-7 days to prevent bacterial growth. Roots typically appear within 2-4 weeks. Once roots reach 2-3 inches, transplant into well-draining potting mix with perlite.
Common Mistakes
Using tap water with high chlorine content can slow root growth. Let tap water sit overnight. Avoid placing cuttings in direct sunlight, which causes algae growth.
When to Pot Up
Transplant when you see multiple white roots at least 2 inches long. Use a chunky aroid mix of potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite in equal parts.
