Succulent Winter Dormancy: A Complete Care Guide
Understanding Succulent Dormancy
Most succulents enter a dormant phase when temperatures drop below 50F (10C). During this period, their growth slows dramatically, and their water needs decrease significantly.
Signs of Dormancy
- Slower or stopped growth
- Leaves may become slightly softer or change color
- Reduced water uptake
- Some species drop lower leaves naturally
Winter Care Essentials
Reduce watering to once every 3-4 weeks. Move plants to a cool (45-55F), bright location. Avoid fertilizing during dormancy. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
Species-Specific Notes
Echeveria and Sempervivum handle cold well. Crassula and Kalanchoe need warmer conditions (above 45F). Jade plants are particularly sensitive to overwatering in winter.
Spring Wake-Up
As temperatures rise in early spring, gradually increase watering and move plants to brighter light. Resume fertilizing once new growth emerges.
