Planting Spring Bulbs in October: Timing and Tips
Why October Is Ideal
Spring-blooming bulbs need 12-16 weeks of cold (below 48F) to develop. October planting gives time to establish roots before ground freezes.
Bulbs by Bloom Time
- Early spring: Snowdrops, crocus, winter aconite (Feb-March)
- Mid-spring: Daffodils, hyacinths, early tulips (March-April)
- Late spring: Late tulips, alliums, fritillaria (April-May)
Planting Depth
Plant at 2-3 times bulb height. Large bulbs: 6-8 inches deep, 4-6 inches apart. Small bulbs: 3-4 inches deep, 2-3 inches apart.
Soil and Location
Well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Amend clay with compost and sand. Add bone meal to the planting hole. Water well after planting.
Naturalizing
Scatter bulbs randomly and plant where they land. Try lasagna planting: layer large bulbs deep, medium in middle, small on top for successive blooms.
