Pest-Proofing Indoor Plants for Winter Months
Why Pests Surge Indoors in Winter
As temperatures drop, insects seek warmth. Plants brought inside may carry hitchhikers, and dry indoor conditions favor spider mites and mealybugs.
Before Bringing Plants Inside
- Inspect: Check leaf undersides, stem joints, soil surface
- Quarantine: Isolate new arrivals for 2 weeks
- Treat: Spray neem oil or insecticidal soap 2-3 times over 2 weeks
- Repot if needed: Fresh soil eliminates soil-dwelling pests
Common Winter Pests
Spider mites: Fine webbing, stippled leaves. Increase humidity. Mealybugs: White cottony masses. Dab with alcohol. Fungus gnats: Black flies from moist soil. Let soil dry more; use sticky traps.
Ongoing Monitoring
Check weekly and catch infestations early. Rotate between neem oil, insecticidal soap, and horticultural oil to prevent resistance.
