Garden Tool Winter Maintenance Checklist
Why Maintain Tools in Fall?
Proper end-of-season care extends tool lifespan by years and ensures spring readiness. Well-maintained tools are safer and more efficient.
Cleaning
Remove soil and plant material with a stiff brush. For rust, use steel wool or a wire brush. Dry thoroughly before the next step.
Sharpening
- Pruners/loppers: Diamond stone or fine file at the bevel angle
- Hoes/shovels: Mill file restores the edge
- Mower blades: Remove and file, or take to a professional
Oiling
Apply camellia oil or boiled linseed oil to metal surfaces. Oil wooden handles to prevent cracking. Store in a dry location.
Power Tool Care
Drain fuel or add stabilizer to gas tools. Remove batteries from cordless tools and store indoors. Clean air filters and check spark plugs.
Inventory
Replace worn tools during off-season sales. Note what worked and what needs upgrading for next season.
