Composting Fall Leaves: A Practical Guide

Composting Fall Leaves: A Practical Guide

Why Compost Leaves?

Fall leaves are rich in carbon and trace minerals. Properly composted, they create leaf mold, one of the best soil amendments. A mature tree produces leaves worth about $50 in fertilizer value.

Methods

Shredding: Mow over leaves to speed decomposition 4x. Pile: Build a 3x3 foot pile, moisten, turn monthly. Add nitrogen (grass clippings, coffee grounds) at 5:1 carbon ratio. Bag: Fill bags with moist shredded leaves, poke holes, store 6-12 months.

Using Leaf Mold

Leaf mold improves soil structure, water retention, and microbial activity. Use as mulch, in planting holes, or screened as seed-starting medium.
