Autumn Watering: Adjusting for Cool Weather
Why Watering Changes in Fall
Cooler temps and shorter days reduce plant water demand. Overwatering in fall promotes root rot and fungal diseases in cool, wet soil.
Outdoor Plants
- Lawns: 1 inch per week including rain. Stop before ground freezes
- Perennials: Deep water every 10-14 days until hard frost
- Trees/shrubs: Deep monthly until freeze, especially evergreens
- New plantings: Keep moist until ground freezes for root establishment
Indoor Plants
Reduce watering 30-50% from summer. Check with your finger — water only when top 1-2 inches are dry. Succulents may need water only monthly.
Overwatering vs. Underwatering
Both cause wilting. Overwatered: yellow lower leaves, mushy stems, moldy soil. Underwatered: crispy edges, dry soil, drooping that recovers after watering.
Winter Prep
Drain and store hoses. Shut off outdoor faucets and drain irrigation systems to prevent pipe bursts.
