Indoor Herb Garden Setup for Winter Growing
Choosing Herbs for Indoor Growing
Not all herbs thrive indoors. The best candidates are basil, chives, parsley, mint, thyme, and oregano. Rosemary and lavender prefer cooler conditions and may struggle with indoor heating.
Light Requirements
Herbs need 6-8 hours of direct light daily. A south-facing window is ideal. If natural light is insufficient, supplement with a full-spectrum LED grow light positioned 6-12 inches above the plants. Run lights 12-14 hours daily on a timer.
Containers and Soil
Use pots with drainage holes, at least 6 inches deep. Fill with a well-draining potting mix amended with perlite (3:1 ratio). Avoid garden soil, which compacts and may harbor pests.
Watering and Feeding
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Most herbs prefer slightly dry conditions. Feed with diluted liquid fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during winter, reducing to half the recommended strength.
Troubleshooting
Leggy growth indicates insufficient light. Yellow lower leaves suggest overwatering. White fuzzy mold on soil surface means too much moisture and poor air circulation.
