Fall Succulent Care: Prep for Winter Dormancy
Why Fall Matters for Succulents
As temperatures drop, succulents enter a critical transition period. Understanding this shift is key to keeping your plants healthy through winter and ensuring vigorous spring growth.
Reduce Watering Gradually
Begin cutting back water in early fall. Most succulents need far less moisture as daylight hours shorten. Overwatering during this period leads to root rot, the number one killer of succulents in cold months.
- Water only when soil is completely dry
- Reduce frequency by 50% compared to summer
- Stop watering entirely for cold-hardy varieties outdoors
Move Tender Varieties Indoors
Echeveria, Haworthia, and most soft succulents cannot survive freezing temperatures. Bring them inside before the first frost. Place near a south-facing window for maximum light exposure.
Protect Outdoor Succulents
Cold-hardy varieties like Sempervivum and Sedum can stay outside but benefit from well-draining soil amendments. Add perlite or pumice to prevent waterlogged conditions during winter rains.
