Fall Container Refresh: Cool-Season Designs
Why Refresh Containers in Fall
Summer annuals are fading, but containers can deliver months of color with cool-season replacements. A fall refresh keeps outdoor spaces vibrant from October through early winter.
Cool-Season Plant Combinations
Thriller-Filler-Spiller Formula
- Thriller (focal point): Ornamental kale, dwarf conifer, or redtwig dogwood stems
- Filler (body): Pansies, ornamental cabbage, heuchera, or dusty miller
- Spiller (trailing edge): Ivy, creeping jenny, or trailing rosemary
Color Palettes for Fall
- Classic autumn: Orange pansies + purple kale + gold creeping jenny
- Elegant neutral: White heuchera + silver dusty miller + dark ivy
- Berry tones: Burgundy ornamental cabbage + pink cyclamen + trailing ivy
Soil and Planting Tips
Remove spent summer plants and refresh the top 3-4 inches of soil with new potting mix. Add slow-release fertilizer. Plant densely for visual impact.
Extending into Winter
Add evergreen elements as hard frosts approach: birch branches, redtwig dogwood stems, pine cones, and berry sprays. In zones 6 and below, move containers to sheltered spots or insulate with straw bales.
