October Birth Flowers: Cosmos and Marigold
The Flowers of October
October has two birth flowers: cosmos and marigold. Both bloom abundantly in early autumn and carry rich symbolic meanings across cultures.
Cosmos: Order and Harmony
The name cosmos comes from the Greek word for order and harmony. Cosmos blooms symbolize peace, love, and tranquility. In the Victorian language of flowers, gifting cosmos expressed a wish for harmonious relationships.
Growing Cosmos
These easy annuals grow from seed in any well-draining soil. They perform better in poor soil — rich soil produces foliage but fewer flowers. Plant in full sun and deadhead for continuous blooming through first frost.
Colors and Meanings
White cosmos represents purity. Pink cosmos symbolizes love. Chocolate cosmos offers deep burgundy blooms with a vanilla-like fragrance.
Marigold: Warmth and Passion
In Mexico, marigolds guide spirits home during Dia de los Muertos. In India, they adorn wedding ceremonies and temple offerings. In Western flower language, they represent warm affection and creativity.
Growing Marigolds
Both African and French marigolds thrive in full sun and average soil. They repel certain garden pests and attract beneficial insects. Most varieties bloom from early summer until hard frost.
Medicinal Uses
Calendula (pot marigold) petals are edible and contain anti-inflammatory compounds used in skin salves. Note that garden marigolds (Tagetes) differ from calendula.
October Flower Combinations
Pair cosmos and marigolds in autumn arrangements for warm orange, gold, pink, and white palettes. Both last five to seven days in vases. Add ornamental grasses for texture.
