March Birth Flowers: Daffodil and Jonquil
The Flowers of March
March has two birth flowers: the daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) and the jonquil (Narcissus jonquilla). Both belong to the Narcissus genus and symbolize rebirth, new beginnings, and the arrival of spring.
Daffodil Symbolism
Daffodils represent renewal and hope. In the language of flowers, they convey unrequited love and chivalry. In Chinese culture, they symbolize good fortune and prosperity, especially when they bloom around the Lunar New Year.
Jonquil Symbolism
Jonquils carry meanings of desire, sympathy, and the wish for returned affection. Their sweet fragrance has made them popular in perfumery for centuries.
Growing Daffodils
- Plant bulbs in fall, 6–8 inches deep, in well-drained soil
- Full sun to partial shade
- Allow foliage to die back naturally (feeds next year's bulb)
- Divide clumps every 3–5 years when flowering declines
Fun Fact
Never mix freshly cut daffodils with other flowers in a vase — daffodil stems release a slimy sap that wilts other blooms. Soak them alone for 24 hours before combining.
